This section discusses global solutions vs. what may be available
inside the host country for international liability insurance and
global property insurance. Our experience shows that even if local
insurance solutions does exist, they are not suitable for anyone
that is not a local national and certainly not adequate for internationally
mobile executives. In other words, the only people that should be
investigating international personal insurance options locally,
are people that are "localizing" and plan to live in the
country indefinitely.
What Solutions are Available Locally in The Host Country for International
Personal Effects Insurance?
Of course, an American working in the U.K. can find both international
property insurance and global liability insurance. What about more
difficult country locations for example, a Canadian working in India,
China, Pakistan, Egypt, Brazil, etc. In reality, there are very
little to no options in most countries to begin with.
If You are Considering a Local Insurance Policy For International
Property and Expatriate Liability Insurance, What Do you Need to Know?
Consider the fact that local solutions are built for local nationals
and not or foreign nationals living in the country means that
IPI solutions are almost always superior to what may be available
locally. If you need the proof, here are the relevant items
when considering a local insurance scheme vs. a global provider
like IPI.
A local provider's coverage is typically only good in the host
country. IPI coverage is world wide. Do you ever travel out
of the country? Does your family travel back to the home country?
(Yes, there are exceptions and insurers that will operate regionally
with the best example being EU insurers and EU citizens traveling
throughout the EU.) However, as a rule of thumb don't expect coverage
outside of your residence country if you purchase a local policy
for international property and liability needs.
A local provider may present you with an insurance company you
have never heard of before. What is their reputation? IPI works
with globally recognized, world-class, A rated insurance companies.
How do you know what will be covered at the time of claim? What
is the insurance standards of the local country? Do they even have
a Department of Insurance? IPI uses insurers legally recognized
internationally, but follow EU and North American insurance standards
where insurance law ensures you get a high quality of coverage.
Finally, the basics.. what if you need to file a claim for $25,000
for a property loss or worse, a $500,000 lawsuit hits you. Do you
want to be pouring over a local insurance policy written in the
local language or a policy document in English from a global insurer
created for internationally mobile individuals?
