The following discusses the role of an appraisal for items considered
valuable articles for international property insurance. In order
to ensure your valuable articles properly, one has to have an appraisal
showing true value for insurance purposes.
What is Considered a Valuable Article for Global Personal Property
Insurance?
There is a tremendous amount of confusion as to what constitutes
a valuable article. Please see the link at left "Valuable Articles
Coverage" for an in depth look at what constitutes a valuable
article when requesting international property insurance. Just because
something is expensive does not mean it has to be classified as
a valuable article and then scheduled in order to obtain international
property insurance? A $5,000 USD Television is not a valuable article.
A $8,000 leather couch is not a valuable article. A top of the line
laptop ($4,000) is not a valuable article. One easy rule of thumb
is, if the item can be bought in a department store or shopping
center, it's most likely not a valuable article. The only exception
is expensive rings and watches (jewelry).
How do I ensure a valuable article with an appraisal?
Jewelry, art, antiques, silverware, and china are the most common
valuable articles. First, you would need an appraisal for the item
less than 5 years old showing the worth of the item. You will need
to insure the item for it's true value and not a lesser percentage
of value.
If you have an appraisal the process of securing the insurance
with International Property Insurance Group is actually quite easy,
and almost always can be done on-line or over the phone.
If you don't have an appraisal you can easily find someone in your
host country that is in the business of appraising property, and
unless the person providing the appraisal is very suspect, the appraisal
will be accepted.
